How Big Is The Greatness Of God?

The greatness of God

In this article, I explore the immense greatness of God through three references from scriptures. We refer to Him as the Almighty God and I attempt to grasp the vastness of God. However, I must admit that these efforts fall short in truly comprehending the magnitude of God. Moreover I provide a biblical example on what happens when one becomes aware to a little glimpse of the greatness of God.

1. Bible Verses To Understand The Greatness Of God

Since God cannot be seen or touched, determining His magnitude is an impossible task. However, we are grateful for His word, which offers insight into the immense greatness of God. Here are three verses to contemplate for a better understanding of God’s magnificence.

1.1 Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? (Isaiah 40:12)

The response to this rhetorical question is that only the Almighty God has the ability to measure the heavens with His fingers. The heavens form part of the Observable Universe, which is the area of space that humans can observe, either directly or theoretically, with technological assistance (Britannica, 2024). Although it is estimated to be around 93 billion light-years in diameter, God can measure it and beyond effortlessly. Truly amazing!

1.2 All the nations of the world are but a drop in the bucket (Isaiah 40:15)

Many consider a nation’s greatness based on factors like GDP, population, land size, wealth, and technological progress. Yet, in a different perspective, all nations are as insignificant as a drop of water in the eyes of God. Elihu, while highlighting God’s might to Job, expressed his awe, stating, “My heart pounds as I think of this. It trembles within me” (Job 37:1). God’s vast power surpasses our understanding, and He uses similes and metaphors to offer us a glimpse, although limited, of His magnificence.

The Greatness Of God

1.3 Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool (Isaiah 66:1)

The greatness of the Almighty God is beyond comprehension. The vastness of the earth merely serves as a footstool for God, while heaven is simply a seat for the Almighty. If the Observable Universe and beyond can be measured by His finger, then His throne must be infinitely grander. What an awe-inspiring and great God we serve!

2. What Happens When You Are Aware Of The Greatness Of God?

Upon recognizing the immense greatness of God, David expressed many words of praise unto God in many Psalms. Praise the Lord! These simple yet profound words can only stem from one who has grasped a glimpse of the greatness of God’s power and magnificence and ultimately leads to a life of praising God. David was an avid worshipper and always he gave thanks and praise to God.

If God sees people below him like grasshoppers (Isaiah 40:22), then then my personal problems equate to nothing before the Almighty God, giving me no reason to fret about them. This is why Jesus tells us said we should not worry in Matthew 6:25. Worrying essentially magnifies a problem beyond its actual limits. Above all else, Jesus said, seek the Kingdom of God and live righteously (Matthew 6:33). Part of seeking the Kingdom of God entails having a deep understanding of who God is, His laws, magnitude, precepts and power.

Acknowledging the greatness of God enables us to willingly surrender to His will. If God sees nations as an insignificant drop of water, then this ought to make us truly humble before Him. Humility stems from self-awareness, based on a realistic understanding of one’s strengths and limitations. When we recognize the greatness of God, we can serve Him with reverence and awe stemming from awareness of His greatness coupled with an awareness of our limitations. John the Baptist expressed his self awareness and the awareness of the greatness of Jesus, the Son of God, in John 3:30, “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less”.
