It’s the beginning of a new year, people are setting goals and embracing the season with enthusiasm and optimism. This article outlines the initial steps in transforming your life to align with your personal aspirations. Then draws insights from Jesus’ teachings, particularly his sermon on the Mount in Matthew 4:17, whose theme was on transformation. The article concludes by sharing a personal anecdote illustrating how my transformative journey in a specific area of my life led personal success.

1. Transforming Ourselves Begins With A Mental Change

Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the kingdom of Heaven is near.”

I wish to focus on the term “repent,” signifying a profound shift in mindset. To influence a change in behavior and attitude, one must communicate with words that compel someone to have an intellectual decision that prompts them to change in behavior. By observing an individual’s actions, one can gain insight into their worldview and self-perception, offering a glimpse into their mental world. Jesus recognized the power of this concept, he shouted “repent…” acknowledging that true transformation begins in the mind.

2. Examples on Transformation

To alter people’s behavior, it is essential to change perspectives. By replacing their existing beliefs and notions with improved ones through verbal communication, a transformative process begins to takes place. Jesus delivered teachings on various topics, contrasting prevailing ideologies with new perspective. Two illustrative instances are highlighted below:

On Love for Enemies (Matthew 5:43-48)

  • Existing perspective: Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
  • New: Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you, in that way you will be acting as true children of God.

On Giving to the Needy (Matthew 6:1-4)

  • Existing Perspective: Don’t do your good deeds publicly to be admired by others, for you will lose your reward from your Father in heaven,
  • New: Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything will reward you.

3. How To Identify That Transformation Has Taken Place

A change in behavior can serve as a visible indicator that a change in mindset has taken place. Romans 12:2 reads, “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” God can transform and reshape how we think about ourselves, Him and on various matters through the teachings found in his word.

As followers of Christ, our aspiration is to mirror the attributes of God, embodying true righteousness and holiness. This occurs through a mental transformation where we let the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes (Ephesians 4:23). Colossians 3:10 reads, “Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.” We get to know about our Creator through his word, his word is transformative we need to read and meditate on it day and night. One may have set a goal for the current year; however achieving this goal requires a mental transformation that will subsequently drive behavioral changes that will lead to goal achievements.

4. How I Transformed My Life For Success

I personally employed this method when I was coming of age. I had failed Math simply because I thought it was so difficult. Until one day I changed my mind about Math, I told myself that it was easy and I’m good at it. With this mental change set, my fear for Math dissipated, I began practicing Math equations with enthusiasm, I actually started enjoying it, this was during my 10th grade.

Transforming our lives begins with a mental change

Thereafter I never failed a Math test nor exam, which then propelled me to pursue an Engineering degree which I obtained from one of the top universities in my continent. All this was achieved by supplanting an old and false perception about something with a new and positive thought that set me up for success.

During years in high school, I personally adopted this transformative approach to tackle a challenging subject – Mathematics. Initially, I struggled with the subject, which led to academic setbacks. However, a pivotal shift in mindset altered my perspective. By viewing Mathematics as a light subject, my fear for mathematical equations gradually diminished. I began practicing mathematical equations with newfound enthusiasm, eventually deriving fun from the process.

This transformation occurred during my 10th-grade year. Subsequently, my performance in Mathematics significantly improved, culminating in a string of successful test results and examinations. With newfound confidence in my mathematical abilities, I ultimately pursued an Engineering degree from a prestigious university in my region. This narrative underscores the transformative power of supplanting old and limited ways of thinking with a new perspective and mindset. This was indeed a major shift in my life that proved instrumental in my academic and professional accomplishments.
