In 2 Samuel, David is described as “a man after God’s own heart.” What qualities did David possess that earned him such an admirable title? Through reflection and study of his life, one profound reason stands out for why he was viewed this way. The number one reason is that David served God single-mindedly.
David’s Single-Minded Worship of God
At first glance, this may seem like a trivial reason, but it holds great significance. Unlike other kings of Israel and Judah, David worshipped God wholeheartedly throughout his life. He never bowed down to any pagan deity; his devotion was solely to the LORD.
In contrast, other kings faltered in their faith. Saul sought guidance from a medium, while Solomon turned to the gods of his wives and concubines.
Kings like Jeroboam created idols for worship (1 Kings 12:28), and Rehoboam, along with others, established pagan shrines for the people of Judah (1 Kings 14:22-24). Such actions brought dishonor to the name of the LORD and were considered spiritual adultery in God’s eyes.
What makes David unique is that, despite his serious sins of adultery and murder, he never engaged in spiritual adultery—he never worshipped any god other than the LORD.
Psalm 119:2-3 NLT
Joyful are those who obey god’s laws and search for Him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in His paths.
He Never Turned His Heart Away From God
No difficult circumstance in David’s life caused him to abandon God. When he faced the loss of his family and belongings to the Amalekites, he found strength in the LORD his God (1 Samuel 30:6).
In times of conflict with Israel’s enemies, David sought God’s guidance (2 Samuel 5:19).
Even when confronted by Nathan the prophet for his actions with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah, David did not turn away from God. Instead, he acknowledged his sins and repented (2 Samuel 12:13).
David was a man who placed his trust in God during both the highs and lows of life. His 103rd Psalm reflects his deep understanding of God’s nature and character.
He experienced God as a healer, redeemer, forgiver of sins, and giver of good things, among other attributes.
Final Remarks
While other kings resorted to mediums in times of distress and uncertainty, David continually sought God’s presence.
We too can experience many of God’s attributes by remaining close to Him. God delights in those who fully rely on Him.
As expressed in Psalm 51:11 (NLT)
“Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.”
God is not impressed by those who are double-minded, neither hot nor cold (Revelations 3:15). He desires men and women who will willingly trust, obey and worship Him, no matter the circumstances they face.
