The Bible describes numerous individuals as servants of the Most High God. Let’s delve into the true meaning of this concept. The insights presented in this article will profoundly bless you, shifting your perspective and igniting a desire within you to genuinely embrace the role of a servant of God.
1. What Is A Servant?
A servant is someone who has willingly submitted their will and authority to another. Thus, being a servant of God signifies the surrender of one’s own will and desires to Him. Before we even came into existence, God chose us from the beginning of time to serve Him.
You might wonder: What does God gain from having us as His servants, and what benefit do I receive by serving Him?
These are legitimate and thoughtful questions worth exploring, and the answers can be found within the pages of the book of Isaiah.
Isaiah 49:3 NLT
He said to me , “You are my servant, Israel, and you will bring me glory.”
It brings God glory when we serve Him. So let’s find out how God is glorified when we serve Him. By this exploration you will discover the benefits of being a servant of God rather than being “free” in the world.
2. How A Servant Is Made In The Kingdom
God has chosen each of us for a specific purpose to fulfill in the earth, and each purpose ultimately brings God great glory. If you are a believer in Christ, rest assured, when God created mankind on the 6th day, you were already chosen to fulfill something in His divine program. This Scripture below confirms this:
Ephesians 1:4 NLT
Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.
God is not surprised by your existence, He knew you and chose you before the foundation of the world to ultimately become His servant.
The Greek word duolos refers to a slave or a servant. And the first two words “duo” literally mean to bind or to bond. In other word’s a servant or slave of God, is someone who is bonded or bound to Him.
The aforementioned Scripture says, “He chose us in Him.” If we are in Him, then we are bonded and bound to Him. Therefore God chose us to operate within Him the same way a servant operates in the courts and confines of the Master.
3. How Do Servants Bring Glory To The Master?
The daily responsibilities of a servant involve fulfilling the Master’s desires. The Master trains the servant on how to meet His expectations and bring Him glory. This process includes educating the servant, and once the training is complete, He commissions them out into the world to carry out His plans and purposes.
When God, our Master, sends forth His servants into the world, He entrusts upon us gifts and resources successfully fulfill the purposes He has established for us.
Paul expressed this notion in this passage:
1 Timothy 1:12 NLT
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him.
Here are a few examples to further illustrate the notion that servants are commissioned by the Master to do works that bring Him glory.
3.1 Abraham’s Servant Commissioned To Look For A Wife For Isaac
Abraham’s servant was commissioned to go his homeland to look for a wife for his son, Isaac. The servant went out to do the will of his master. Abraham capacitated the servant by giving him of gold, jewels, to carry out the mission successfully.
Genesis 24:10 NLT
Then he, [the servant], loaded ten of Abraham’s camels with all kinds of expensive gifts from his master.
Thereafter, servant was indeed successful in obtaining a wife for the master’s son (Genesis 24:56).
3.2 Jesus Sends Out The Disciples
After a period where the disciples were following Jesus, it came a time where Jesus commissioned them into the world.
Matthew 10:1 KJV
And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
He gave them power and sent them out into the world. The results was tremendous, they returned with a report that demons would submit to them in Jesus’ name (Luke 10:17).
3.3 Paul Commissioned To Preach To The Gentiles
The bible records that Saul, who later became Paul, was chosen for the purpose of preaching to the Gentiles.
Acts 9:15 NLT
But the Lord said, “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.

When Paul yielded to Christ, he began proclaiming the message of the Good News to the Gentiles. In all his letters to the churches, Paul introduced himself as being chosen by God, and also as a servant of Christ.
This was a way to show that whatever he had written was a direct message from God to His people.
Romans 1:1 NLT
This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach His Good News.
Therefore, salves are chosen and sent out to do the will of God, and bring Him glory.
4. When God Sends Out His Servants
There are seven types of gifts God entrusts His servants when He sends them out into the world. All these seven gifts when displayed, through His servants, in the world attract mankind to Him. They are:
- Power
- Riches
- Wisdom
- Strength
- Honor
- Glory
- Blessings
What an extraordinary privilege it is to serve God! Being entrusted with such divine gifts and commissioned to venture into the world to showcase these heavenly gifts and bring Him glory is truly special. Paul beautifully encapsulated this idea in his letter to the Roman church, stating:
Romans 11:36 NLT
For everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Amen.
5. Final Remarks
To be a servant of God is truly a privilege. To remain in His presence, to learn His ways, to understand His heart, and to receive His divine gifts, all while being sent out into the world to bring Him glory.
Jesus prayed for us, the believers, affirming that He has chosen us to fulfill his will and entrusted us with the mission to go forth into the world and bring glory to Him. The below Scriptures passages below serve as a confirmation:
The choosing of believers:
John 17:9-10 NLT
My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you. All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory.
The entrusting of gifts (see also see Acts 1:4&8):
John 17:7-8 NLT
Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you, and I have passed onto them the message you gave me.
The commissioning of believers:
John 17:18 NLT
Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.
Dear reader, this is the journey of a servant of God, embellished with divine gifts that inspire wonder in others. These gifts serve as proof of our connection with the Master, demonstrating our origin from Him, so that others may also enter His courts. Through spiritual guidance, they too can become servants of God, called to bring Him glory.
